[EN] Rules: Shooting

Umbra Turris has very interesting Shooting rules.

The hero must first test if shoot has Hit the target and only if he succeeds it is tested whether shot dealt any damage. The shooter has Aiming possibility - it makes Hitting the target more difficult, but increases the chance to inflict more damage.

Hitting is a d6 test in which player should get a result equal to or greater than the number of tens of distance to the target. Rolling one in Hitting test always means failure. It sounds a little complicated, but it is very simple:

    for distances from 0 to 29 cm shooter must get a score of 2 + to hit the target;
    for distances of 30 to 39 cm shooter must get a score of 3 + to hit the target;
    for distances of 40 to 49 cm shooter must get a score of 4 + to hit the target;
    for a distance of 50 to 59 cm shooter must get the result of 5 + to hit the target;
    for distances of 60 to 69 cm shooter must get the result 6 + to hit the target;

Successful Hitting means that the shot reached the target and it should be tested if the shot will inflict any damage. The hero, who took a shot takes 2d6 and adds to it BS characteristic and all relevant modifiers. The hero who was the target takes 2d6 and adds to it the T characteristic. If shooting player got higher score then target takes damage equal to weapon damage (for example - bow deals 1 damage).

Modifiers which may affect the shooting:

    target has Action dice +1 BS
    target does not have Actiondice -1BS
    target is in contact with terrain or other character -1BS
    the target is located within terrain -2BS
    shooter is in a melee -3BS
    shooting throug terrain -3BS

As you can see shooting is not so easy, and damage is not great. And here comes Aiming. Increasing the level of difficulty of Hitting by one (as if the target was 10 cm further), the hero receives a bonus +1 BS and damage is increased by 1. The player is free to choose how much he want to raise the level of Hitting difficulty. How cool is that?

Uncle Good Advice: if you shoot at the target which is at a distance of 0 to 19 cm theoretical Hitting difficulty level is 1. But every 1 on dice is a failure, so you have to throw two or more. In this case we can raise the level of difficulty to 2 + (by one) to increase the chance of wounding the target without hindering Hitting.

[EN] Rules: Combat

The only way to reach hand-to-hand combat in Umbra is Charging the enemy. If the character is within Charge range, attacking hero is placed next to the edge of the enemy base and the Fighting begins.

The first element of Fighting is Parrying - an attempt to hit an opponent. Hero body is divided into three locations: the legs (1-2 on a dice), the body (3-4 on a dice) and the head (5-6 on a dice). Attacking player chooses which location to attack, defending player - which he wants to defend. Both players set desired location on d6 while covering it by hand and at the same time they reveal the dices. If the defending player set on the dice the same location as the attacker, Parrying has succeeded. Otherwise, the attacking player chooses one of the types of attack: a standard, force or precise attack.

Type of attack defines which characteristic* is used, the amount of dices needed for the test and the amount of damage dealt.

  • In the standard attack both players roll a d6 and add the value of their WS. Amount of damage is equal to the difference in the results (if the attacker received greater result than the defender).
  • In the force attack both players roll two d6 and add the value of S (attacker) and T (defending). Amount of damage is equal to the difference in the results (if the attacker received greater result than the defender).
  • In the precise attack both players roll two d6 and add the value of their Sp. This attack deals two damage (if the attacker received result greater than the defender). If the attacker rolled a six on the dice there is a chance to inflict critical damage. Also armours do not protect from this attack.

In any case, the attacker adds to their score modifier from used weapon (only the attacking hero!).

Uncle Good Advice:
If you want to reduce the chance of receiving damage from enemy try using the shields. They allow blocking an opponents attack before Parrying. However, to use the shield, the hero can not have Action Dice!
Also if you don't like when your attacks are parried then you should charge at back of your enemies - defending hero can't react to attack from behind and it is considered as if defender failed Parrying.

For additional information about charging, unarmed combat, critics or use of shields, refer back to the free rules which should be available soon to download at Umbra Turris site (now there is only the Polish version available). Also, informations on this blog are not official translation!

*Each race has their own characteristic and they are:
Ld - leadership
M - movement in cm
WS - weapon skill
S - strength
Sp - speed
BS - ballistic skill
T - toughness
W - wounds

[EN] First steps in the City of Dark Towers

Umbra Turris is a fantasy miniatures game, where the player commands a team of 6 to 16 heroes. Goal of the game is to get two Triumph Points (which are obtained by fulfilling tasks from Scenario Cards) or simply defeating the enemy in battle.

As player creates a team, one of five characters is chosen: the forces of good, lawful, neutral, anarchists or evil. Selected character decides what race, profession and magic will be available to the player heroes. And there is plenty to choose from - there are 24 races and 54 professions. This gives a very RPGs feel and a lot of pleasure in finding all kinds of interesting connections between them.

The game is divided on Cycles. In each Cycle, the players alternately activate one model of their heroes at a time. Each hero has a Action Dice, which allows them to make one Primary and one Secondary action. Primary Actions are: moving, charging, fighting, shooting and casting spells. The game is based on a six-sided dice and offers some interesting solutions for fighting, shooting and magic. I'll write about it in the following entries.

Playing time, at the lowest point scale (750 Silver Ducats) takes a little over an hour. Considering the low models cost, free rules and using small number of models and terrain, Umbra Turris can be recommend to players who want to get started with wargaming, as well as to experienced players, as the system for a quick and enjoyable play.

As I have said earlier - that is not official translation of in game terms, so when the rules comes out names could be different. But I think that gives a little view on the game for all the curious. Also some feedback about my writing skills would be nice, as English is not my native language :)
